Why Can Something Good Make Me Anxious?

Imagine finding out that you just won $20,000.

It sounds like the kind of moment that should feel completely good.

But one person might celebrate while another immediately starts thinking:

What am I going to do with it?
Who do I tell?
What if I waste it?
What if people expect something from me?

The good experience has not changed.

But inside, a lot may suddenly start moving.

We sometimes assume our emotions should match the event in front of us. Good things should make us happy. Calm moments should make us calm. Compliments should make us feel good.

Human reactions are rarely that simple.

An experience enters a much larger inner landscape. Excitement can bring uncertainty. A compliment can bring attention we are not comfortable receiving. Success can create new expectations. Even calm can feel unfamiliar if we are used to constantly preparing for what comes next.

So feeling anxious during something good does not necessarily mean you do not appreciate it.

It may simply mean that more than one thing is happening at the same time.

You can be excited and uncertain.
Grateful and overwhelmed.
Happy and a little afraid of what comes next.

Rather than forcing yourself to have the “right” reaction, it can be more helpful to ask:

What did this good thing stir up in me?

Sometimes understanding that movement makes it much easier to actually enjoy what is happening.
