Why Do Small Things Sometimes Cause Big Reactions?

Sometimes the moment in front of us seems too small for the reaction it creates.

A short text feels dismissive. A change in someone’s tone makes us tense. A minor mistake can suddenly feel embarrassing, threatening, or overwhelming.

The reaction may be happening now, but it is not necessarily responding only to now.

We take in an experience and give it meaning through everything already living inside us: memories, expectations, relationships, roles, and ways we have learned to protect ourselves.

That is why two people can experience the same moment very differently.

In the Growing Self, I think of this as something entering an already existing landscape. A little rain falling onto dry ground behaves differently than rain falling into a river that is already overflowing.

Instead of asking, “Why am I reacting like this?” as though the reaction is evidence that something is wrong, we can get more curious.

What did this moment seem to mean?

Maybe the criticism felt like rejection.
Maybe the silence felt like disconnection.
Maybe the mistake felt like failure.

The reaction starts making more sense when we understand what the experience landed in.

The goal is not to justify every reaction. It is to understand it well enough that we have more choice in what happens next.
