EXPANDING CURRENTS

The Directing Current

Using awareness and choice to give direction to how we respond.

The Directing Current is the instinct to direct your life from awareness rather than reaction. It is the ability to use the meanings you create to guide your life instead of being driven by automatic patterns.

I call this the Directing Current because choice gives direction to the Self. It does not control the whole Stream, but it helps decide how I move with what is happening.

Choice is not control. Choice is direction.

The Directing Current brings awareness of options, rather than forcing action. It creates space between impulse and response.

The Mountains may rise, the Stream may rush, and the Channels may be under pressure, but in that space the Self can return to itself.

It can notice, “I have more than one way to move.”
Reaction asks, “How do I get safe right now?”
Choice asks, “What kind of response fits who I am and what matters here?”

This is how we live with intention that is shaped by meaning, not just habit or routine.

Habit follows the old Channel because it is familiar. Intention asks whether that Channel still leads where I want to go.

If I make the meaning that conflict is always danger, I will choose avoidance.
If I make the meaning that conflict can sometimes bring clarity, I may choose expression.
If I make the meaning that discomfort means failure, I may stop.
If I make the meaning that discomfort can be part of growth, I may take the next step.

The Directing Current does not force outcomes. It works within uncertainty and allows for flexibility.

It does not wait for certainty before choosing. It chooses with the information available and then stays flexible enough to adjust.

Choice is not a guarantee that I picked perfectly. It is a willingness to participate in the direction of my life.

Choice lets us flow with the Stream instead of being caught in it.

Being caught in the Stream means the current decides for me. I become the emotion, repeat the old pattern, get carried by fear, and lose the Self inside the moment.

Flowing with the Stream means I can feel the current, respect its force, and still participate in how I move.

Choice does not mean every option is available. We are still human. We still have limits, histories, bodies, responsibilities, and circumstances.

But even within limits, there is often some direction available.

Sometimes the option is not whether the storm comes.

The option is how I breathe inside it.

Sometimes the option is not whether I feel angry.

The option is whether I attack, pause, speak clearly, or take space.

Sometimes the option is not whether I am afraid.

The option is whether fear gets to make every decision.

Choice is not always a dramatic turning point.

Sometimes it is the small decision to pause before answering, to ask one more question, to tell the truth gently, to try again, or to not turn one feeling into a whole identity.

Choice does not always mean moving forward.

Sometimes choice is waiting.
Sometimes choice is resting.
Sometimes choice is leaving.
Sometimes choice is choosing not to turn a feeling into an action.

The difficulty is that choice is hardest when it matters most.

When we are overwhelmed, we react. Choice becomes harder when the system is flooded because the Self narrows around protection.

The body wants speed. The mind wants certainty. The old Channels offer familiar routes.

We avoid what we don’t want to face. We freeze and wait for things to resolve on their own. Or we become so entangled in the experience that we lose our sense of self within it. In these moments, the Directing Current is harder to access, but it is also most needed.

When fight rises, choice may be the pause before force.
When flight rises, choice may be staying one moment longer.
When freeze rises, choice may be one small movement.
When fawn rises, choice may be telling the truth even if someone is disappointed.

The Directing Current is the ability to choose how you move within the Stream, even when the current is strong.

Choice does not mean everything that happens is my fault.

It means I have some relationship with what happens next.

Responsibility is not the same as blame. Responsibility is the ability to respond from the part of me that is aware.

I may not have chosen the storm, but I may still have a choice in how I shelter, how I move, who I reach for, and what meaning I make after it passes.

These currents are always moving through us. Growth does not come from forcing change, but from staying connected to these currents as they move.

Curiosity opens the moment.
Connection keeps me in relationship with it.
Expression lets the inner world move outward.
Movement gives the Self a step.
Creation shapes the meaning.
Choice directs the response.

When these currents are allowed to flow, the system expands naturally. When they are blocked, pressure builds and the system shifts into protection.

The work is not to become something artificial or to rebuild yourself into someone else.

The work is to stay connected to what is already alive and trying to move within you.

The Directing Current reminds us that we are not only carried by life. We also have a relationship with how we move through it.

The Stream may be strong, the path may be unclear, and the outcome may be unknown, but choice gives the Self a way to participate.

It gives us direction while we are still becoming.
