EXPANDING CURRENTS
The Shaping Current
Turning what life gives us into new meaning, possibilities, and ways forward.
The Shaping Current is the instinct to make something out of what is in front of you that didn’t exist before. I call this the Shaping Current because creation is not only making art, music, or objects.
It is the instinct to shape experience into meaning. It takes what life gives us and forms something with it. We don’t have to make meaning out of things, but we do it automatically.
The Shaping Current takes experience and forms meaning in real time. Meaning is not only something we discover later when we look back.
Meaning is also being formed while we are living.
We are constantly deciding what something is, what it means, and what to do with it. These are the moment-to-moment interpretations that the Growing Self organizes and integrates.
We do this all the time:
We take grief and shape it into a ritual.
We take scattered thoughts and shape them into language.
We take fear and shape it into a plan.
We take a mistake and shape it into wisdom.
The Shaping Current is not the same as escaping into imagination.
Fantasy may pull us away from reality, but creation engages with reality and shapes it. It uses what is actually here.
The Shaping Current does not force reality to become what I want it to be. It shapes my relationship with reality so I can respond with more honesty and flexibility.
The Stream forms Channels, the concepts that allow information to flow in a stable and efficient way.
These Channels reduce pressure on the system by giving experience a predictable path. If every experience had to be understood from nothing, the system would become overwhelmed.
Channels let life move with some order.
They help the Self recognize patterns and make meaning without having to start over every time.
But the Stream is not static.
When a new experience does not fully fit the existing Channels, friction emerges.
Friction is the feeling that something is off. It is the rub between the meaning I expected and the reality I am facing.
It happens when the old concept cannot hold the new experience. It happens when the story I had no longer explains the situation. It happens when an old identity, role, or belief starts to feel too narrow for what life is showing me.
This friction creates pressure between what we expect and what is actually happening.
The Shaping Current is what engages with that pressure.
It does not remove friction by pretending it is not there. It works with the friction.
It asks what needs to be shaped, widened, adjusted, or created so the Self can stay in relationship with reality.
The Shaping Current molds the Channels by updating our concepts so they better reflect reality. In this way, growth occurs as our understanding becomes more flexible and accurate.
Not every meaning helps us grow. Some meanings protect us for a while, but still distort what is happening. Some meanings comfort us but keep us from seeing clearly.
The Shaping Current helps us create meanings that are not only easier to carry, but more honest.
I may believe I am bad at conflict. Then I have a hard conversation and survive it.
The old Channel says, “Conflict is dangerous.”
But the new experience gives the Self something else to work with. The Shaping Current can create a new meaning: “Conflict is uncomfortable, but it can also bring clarity.”
The Channel widens. The Self has more room to move.
This is how the Shaping Current works with the other currents.
Curiosity opens the door.
Connection keeps me in relationship with what I find.
Expression gives it a voice.
Movement lets me act on it.
The Shaping Current takes all of this and begins to form something new.
It gives shape to the experience so the Self can understand it, carry it, and grow from it.
If the Shaping Current is resisted, the Channels remain rigid. The pressure does not disappear. It is redirected, distorted, or suppressed, leading to tension within the system.
When the Shaping Current is blocked, the Self keeps trying to pour new water through an old Channel.
We repeat old stories. We force reality into outdated concepts. We keep saying, “This is just how I am,” even when life is asking us to become more flexible.
The blocked Shaping Current can make life feel narrow. We lose the ability to imagine new options. We reduce ourselves and others into fixed labels.
We may become stuck in meanings that once helped us survive but no longer help us grow.
The Stream still moves, but the Channels do not adjust. Pressure builds because the system is trying to use an old shape for a new reality.
The Shaping Current does not need the perfect form. It needs a form to begin with.
Creation often starts messy because meaning is being shaped while we are still discovering it. We may not know exactly what something means yet, but we begin forming it through words, images, choices, questions, and action.
The meaning becomes clearer as we work with it.
Over time, the meanings we shape begin to influence the Trunk.
I am not only someone who failed.
I am someone who learned.
I am not only someone who was hurt.
I am someone who is healing.
I am not only someone who was confused.
I am someone who is forming a new understanding.
The Shaping Current allows the Self to change without needing to erase everything that came before.
The Shaping Current is where meaning is not only formed, but challenged and reshaped. It is the force that allows the Stream to adapt rather than stagnate.
Channels give us stability, but the Shaping Current is what allows them to evolve.
Without Channels, the Stream has no direction.
Without the Shaping Current, the Stream has no way to change direction when life asks it to.
New understanding can change the way we see an old experience. Once something becomes visible, we may have to find a new way to carry it.
