EXPANDING CURRENTS
The Forward Current
Taking one honest step even when the whole path is not yet clear.
The Forward Current is the instinct to step out, to engage, and to act without complete certainty. This is the instinct to go forward even though the plan is unclear and the outcomes aren’t known.
Movement is not always a big leap. Sometimes it is one small honest step that brings the Self back into motion. The Forward Current does not need the whole map. It needs enough ground for the next step.
This is the gap between knowing and doing that instinct tells us to fill with action.
We can know what needs to happen and still not move.
We can understand the pattern, name the fear, see the next step, and still remain still.
The Forward Current is what helps the Self cross that space between insight and action.
Curiosity helps us see.
Connection helps us stay.
Expression helps us say.
Movement helps us do.
The Forward Current can be uncomfortable. It feels like hesitation and contemplation. There is self-doubt and a lot of “I’m not ready yet.”
Movement is uncomfortable because it takes the idea out of the protected inner world and places it into reality. As long as I am thinking about it, I can still imagine every possible outcome. Once I move, something actually happens.
The world gets to respond.
Sometimes we wait to feel ready before we move, but readiness is often something that movement creates.
We become ready by taking the first step, adjusting, and learning from what happens. Certainty often comes after movement, not before it.
The first step does not have to prove that everything will work. It only has to show the Self that movement is possible.
As we act, the uncertainty and discomfort become known. The unknown becomes something we can actually work with.
But afterwards, we feel momentum and relief, almost like going to the gym.
Before going to the gym, the body may resist. The mind may make excuses. The couch may feel like the safest place in the world.
But after moving, something changes. The body remembers that it can act. The Self gets evidence that discomfort can be survived.
Movement regulates because it gives the system somewhere to send its energy. Worry circles inside. Movement gives the energy a direction.
This does not mean we force ourselves forward without awareness. Movement does not mean I am no longer afraid.
It means fear is no longer the only thing that directs me.
It looks small and intentional. It is sending the email, washing the dish, opening the document, taking the walk, making the call, saying the first sentence, or standing up after sitting too long with the thought.
This Forward Current wants our lives to move and wants something to happen. It wants the inner world to have contact with the outer world. It wants the Self to learn through experience and not only through thinking.
Sometimes we can use this movement as a distraction and we are busy without real direction.
Busyness can look like movement, but it may only be another form of flight.
The body is moving, the calendar is full, and the mind feels productive, but the Self may still be avoiding the place that needs attention. We can avoid the issues with our movement.
We go everywhere except where we need to go.
Direction does not mean I know the whole path. It means the step is connected to something that matters.
Not all movement is the Forward Current.
Some movement is impulsive and tries to escape discomfort.
Some movement is perfectionistic and waits for the perfect plan.
Some movement is preoccupied and keeps circling around the same decision.
The Forward Current can be blocked by staying still, but it can also be blocked by moving everywhere except forward. Or we can resist movement through suppression, avoid it altogether, or become preoccupied with the movement.
I can pretend I do not want to move.
I can know I need to move and stay still.
I can obsess over the perfect move until no move is ever made.
I can fill my life with tasks and still avoid the one honest step.
The Forward Current is not about being busy. It is about moving with direction.
When the Forward Current is blocked, the Mountains may try to move for us.
Fight forces.
Flight escapes.
Freeze stops.
Fawn moves toward what keeps others pleased.
The Forward Current is different because it moves from awareness instead of survival. It does not demand that everything be clear.
It only asks that something true begins to move.
Movement creates new meaning because the Self receives new evidence.
The old belief may say, “I can’t do this.”
The forward current answers, “Maybe I can.”
The old belief may say, “I’ll fall apart.”
The movement answers, “I survived that.”
The old belief may say, “Nothing will change.”
The one small step answers, “Something already did.”
With the Forward Current, you take one step at a time even if it isn’t completely clear.
The Forward Current asks us to find the next place our foot can land.
You don’t always need to see the whole path before you begin. Sometimes growth starts with enough clarity to take the next step.
