EXPANDING CURRENTS
The Outward Current
Giving our inner world a way to move outward through honest expression.
The Outward Current is the instinct to let the internal move to the external. We feel something and we allow that to be shown in the outside world.
This is the expression of the Self and it resolves tension. Expression is not only speaking. It is any way the inner world becomes visible.
The Self expresses through words, movement, tears, creativity, honesty, boundaries, affection, and action.
Without the Outward Current, we feel something and pressure begins to build. Now this pressure has to be managed. When the Outward Current is blocked, the Stream has nowhere to send what is inside. The feeling stays in the system and begins to press against the Channels.
What could have been a sentence becomes a resentment.
What could have been a boundary becomes distance.
What could have been a tear becomes numbness.
Expression releases the pressure of carrying the truth alone.
It is the instinct to say something, even though it might not come out right. Expression has a feeling and a pressure that builds until something must be done.
While in the Outward Current, it feels vulnerable and uncertain. Expression is being vulnerable because the inside is no longer hidden.
Once I say it, write it, show it, or ask for it, the world can respond.
Then after, there is relief and clarity.
The Outward Current does not need perfect words. It needs honest movement.
If we wait until the expression is polished enough to be safe, we may never say it.
This is finally having the conversation that you have been putting off. The words may not come out perfectly. You may stumble, over-explain, shake a little, or feel exposed.
But something in the system changes because the truth is no longer trapped inside.
The instinct to show ourselves and how we feel is within each of us but our fears block the Outward Current and we can lose ourselves.
We may be afraid of conflict, rejection, judgment, or being misunderstood. We may fear that our needs are too much or that our feelings are not valid.
We may fear that if we say the truth, the relationship will change.
So instead of allowing the inside to move outward, we hold it in and hope it goes away.
The Outward Current comes from awareness.
It is the “I’m frustrated and want to talk about it.”
It is “I don’t agree, but I want to understand.”
It is “I miss you,” and the “I need support.”
It is not only the expression of pain.
It is also the expression of love, excitement, desire, need, joy, and truth.
Expression is not the same as erupting.
Reaction throws the inner world onto the outside. Expression brings the inner world into relationship with the outside world.
Reaction says, “I feel something and I need to discharge it quickly.” Expression says, “I feel something and I want to bring it forward honestly.”
This is why the Outward Current needs awareness. It is not just releasing pressure. It is releasing pressure in a way that keeps the Self connected to what is happening.
Connection keeps us in relationships, but expression lets the relationships know where we actually are.
If I stay connected but never express myself, I may look present while disappearing inside.
When the Outward Current is connected, it is able to accommodate for disruption. I can feel something, say something, and still remain in relation with myself and the other person.
The truth has room to move so the system does not have to hold all of the pressure alone.
But if there isn’t a connection, we stay quiet and agree to avoid tension. Or I feel something and try to push it down or expect others to notice.
When expression is blocked, we may start hoping others will read the pressure we refuse to release. We want them to notice the silence, the distance, the mood, or the small signals.
Then we become hurt when they do not understand what we never said.
All of this builds resentment and pressure within the psyche.
Resentment often forms where expression was needed but never allowed.
The Self keeps a record.
Over time, the unspoken does not disappear. It changes shape. It may become distance, irritability, numbness, sadness, or the feeling that nobody understands us.
But sometimes nobody understands us because we have not allowed ourselves to be known.
Not every feeling needs to be expressed in every moment. Sometimes silence is choice. Sometimes silence is wisdom.
Sometimes the moment is not safe, the words are not ready, or the other person is not able to receive what we have to say.
The problem is when silence is not chosen freely but used as protection because the Self does not feel safe enough to be known.
When expression is blocked long enough, the Self may begin to believe it has nothing to say.
The Trunk can start to form around being easy, quiet, agreeable, or invisible. We may become the person who does not need anything, does not complain, does not ask for help, and does not take up space.
But the inner world is still there.
It still wants to move.
It still wants to be seen.
As we allow for expression and follow our instinct to express ourselves, we deepen our relationships with our world. We allow for the imperfections and lean into the sincerity that we feel.
Sometimes expression is a conversation. Sometimes it is a painting, a song, a walk, a prayer, a journal entry, or the simple act of letting the tears come.
The form matters less than the movement.
The inside is given a way to become real in the outside world. This expression of our inner world nourishes the Self to make profound meanings.
Expression nourishes the Self because it tells the inner world that it matters enough to be brought forward.
It allows others to know us more honestly, and it allows us to know ourselves more clearly. It turns vague pressure into clear meaning. It gives the Self evidence that it can be seen and survive.
The Outward Current releases what has been held, and in that release, the Self has more room to grow.
