THE GROWING SELF MODEL

The Flower

The part of us that can notice what is happening without making the experience our whole identity.

The Flower is the Self that sits above the Stream and observes the picture unfolding. It is not separate from the Landscape. It is still connected to the Roots, Trunk, Branches, Channels, and everything moving underneath it.

The Flower is affected by what happens in the system, but it is also the part that can notice the system as it is happening.

The Flower is not the same as the Trunk. The Trunk is identity and the Flower is awareness.

The Trunk says, “This is who I am.”
The Flower says, “I notice what is happening.”

This is an important difference because identity can get wrapped up in the experience very quickly.

The Flower gives us the ability to step back just enough to see that something is happening within us. The Flower notices the surge of water and braces with the concepts and connections that it has formed. It gathers what is happening in the Landscape and turns it into conscious meaning.

The Rain brings information.
The Mountains filter and organize it.
The Channels give it a path.
The Roots attach emotional meaning.
The Trunk expresses identity.
The Branches pull from our relationships.

The Flower looks at all of this and tries to understand, “What is happening here, and what does this mean?”

The Flower produces meaning that reinforces the Channels and stimulates the Roots. If the Flower keeps making the same meaning from the same situations, those Channels deepen and the Roots strengthen around them.

If I keep interpreting silence as rejection, then that meaning becomes easier for the Stream to follow. If I begin to wonder if silence could also mean someone is busy, tired, distracted, or unsure what to say, then the Landscape has more room to move.

The Flower looks for calmness so it can see the world clearly and becomes frantic when it can’t. When the Stream is calm, the Flower has more space to notice what is happening.

When the Stream surges, everything moves faster. The Mountains activate, the Channels flood, the Roots strain, the Trunk stiffens, and the Branches pull.

It becomes harder to tell the difference between what is happening, what I feel, what I fear, and what is actually true.

The Flower moves about, shifting its weight and looking for calmness. This shift means that it is now supported by different Roots and different meanings are produced depending on which Roots it is relying on.

The same situation can create different meanings depending on where the Flower leans.

If someone does not text me back, the Flower may lean into rejection and say, “They do not care about me.”

It may lean into fear and say, “Something is wrong.”
It may lean into curiosity and say, “I wonder what is going on.
It may lean into trust and say, “They may just be busy.”

The event may be the same, but the meaning changes depending on what supports the Flower.

The Flower’s meanings help drive the systems of the mind and direct action. This does not mean the Flower controls everything. It does not control the first feeling, the first body reaction, the past, other people, or the fact that the Stream moves.

Choice does not mean total control.

Choice means there is a little more room to decide what I do with what is happening.

The Flower is the Self’s ability to recognize the experience as separate from the person. This is the part that notices what we feel.

This is why I am able to have moments of anger without identifying as an angry person. I can say, “Anger is happening in me,” instead of, “I am an angry person.”

That small space matters. It separates the feeling from the identity, the reaction from the character, and the pain from the person.

This ability to separate the experience from the individual gives us space, and in that space we have choice.

Space may be a pause before reacting.
It may be naming what is happening.
It may be noticing that I have more than one option.
It may be feeling something without immediately obeying it.
If I feel rejected, I may want to withdraw right away.

But if the Flower has enough space, I can notice the feeling, question the meaning, and choose whether withdrawing is actually what I want to do.

This is the difference between reaction and response.

A reaction happens when the Landscape moves automatically and the Self gets carried by the current.

I feel attacked, so I attack back.
I feel afraid, so I run.
I feel ashamed, so I hide.

A response happens when the Flower has enough space to notice what is happening and choose the next movement.

I feel defensive, so I pause.
I feel afraid, so I look for support.
I feel ashamed, so I try to stay connected instead of disappearing.

The line between an experience and the Self is unclear when things are difficult. We have a hard time because everything is happening fast and under pressure.

In those moments, the Flower does not disappear, but it may become harder to access.

Awareness can shrink when the system is flooded. This is why we do things under stress that we might not do when we are calm.

It is not because we are broken.

It is because the whole Landscape is moving quickly and trying to protect itself.

The Flower develops over time. We are not born with a fully grown ability to observe ourselves. The Flower grows through safety, reflection, language, relationships, curiosity, repair, and experience.

We learn to notice what is happening inside of us.
We learn to name feelings.
We learn to pause.
We learn to ask better questions.
We learn that a feeling can be real without being the whole truth.

As we slow down and give ourselves more room, we discover choices that we have never known.

Awareness alone does not fix everything. The whole Landscape may still need safety, support, repair, boundaries, time, and new experiences.

But awareness gives us room.

It helps us see that something is happening in us, not that something is wrong with us. This is where change happens and how we are able to explore the world in a meaningful way.

In the model of the Growing Self, the Flower is the observing and meaning-making awareness of the Self. It is the part that notices what is happening, creates space between experience and identity, and allows the possibility of choice.

There can be a small space between what happens to us and what we do next. Sometimes that space changes everything.
